The Neighborhood
Tacony is a historic Philadelphia neighborhood located 8 miles Northeast of Central Philadelphia along the banks of the Delaware River. With over 30,000 residents, Tacony has two major residential zones, West of Torresdale Avenue and East of Torresdale Avenue, as well as a large industrial zone along the shore of the Delaware River and several business corridors, primarily on Torresdale avenue, as well as on Princeton Avenue, Cottman Avenue and along Longshore avenue. From our historic Victorian homes to our early-20th-century, modest brick rowhouses or more modern post-war rowhouses, we have a home for every family’s needs. The neighborhood also boasts a diverse range of businesses, including salons, daycares centers, and hoagie shops!
Tacony is notable for its great diversity and multicultural identity. There are 16 spoken languages in Tacony, including Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Albanian, and Vietnamese. Our racial demographics have also diversified since 2010, with a growing number of Hispanic, Black, and Asian residents moving into the neighborhood. The neighborhood has a large population under the age of 18 and over the age of 65 compared to other neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Our residents are mostly homeowners, but there are decent amount of renters in the neighborhood.
Another notable feature of the neighborhood is Tacony’s abundance of green spaces and access to nature. Parks in the neighborhood include Vogt Park, Disston Park, Roosevelt Playground, Russo Park, Dorsey Playground, American Legion #21 Playground, Mullin Playground, Lardener’s Point Park, Tacony Creek Park, and the Kensington and Tacony River Trail. Each of these parks has active programming and is cared for greatly by neighbors, neighborhood organizations, and visitors.
Tacony has access to the Delaware river as well via the K&T trail and Tacony Creek park, allowing for boating and fishing on the river. Organizations like Tacony Together, Riverfront North Partnership, and the Tacony Community Garden are responsible for programming, maintenance, and preservation of the Tacony Parks and work hand in hand with Parks and Recreations to make sure our green spaces are thriving spaces for people and nature alike.
